though common
is exquisite.
Each bloom lasts but a day.
When beleaguered or busy
I miss the moment.
Perhaps another
tomorrow.
Perhaps not.
A ready reminder to look
and not overlook
extraordinary beauty
waiting in the commonplace.
I'm not sure what it means to inaugurate this blog with a tropical flower blossoming in December.
I suppose bold blooms on the eve of blustering cold somehow speak to me...
Winter will come soon enough.
And I know each season has
beauties and consolations.
Today the soft breeze brushes my cheek.
Today the sunshine warms my face.
Today the hibiscus is ablaze with beauty.
This is really beautiful! Rev. Tim, you have real talent.
ReplyDelete--I'm his brother so I know for sure ;-)
I am SO NOT SURPRISED that you chose the hibiscus for your inaugural blog. You've been musing about this flower for quite some time now :) Your meaningful words about its fleeting beauty and the analogy to enjoy and pay attention to the beauty in our own lives each and every day will not be forgotten by those attending Paul's memorial service in 2008.
ReplyDelete"Today, while the blossom still clings to the vine..."
When I first saw the HI-biscus in your heading, I thought of it as denoting Hawaii's state flower (HI abbreviation). But I'm thinking you meant "HI" as in "Hello, aren't I beautiful for this one special day, and are you noticing?"
Aloha, and Mahalo. I look forward to further McLeMusings.
Thank you, Deb. I suppose the lessons to be learned from the hibiscus are not once and for all-time, but rather to be remembered moment by moment and, if life permits, day by day through the years. Sharing it at Paul's graveside in Colorado was one of those moments I, too, treasure and will not forget. Must add how much I appreciate your noticing the "HI-biscus" heading. Either interpretation works, but your surmising about my musing is spot on, and the way you phrased it is lovely.
DeleteFinally...the master MUSician and theologian muses on his own blog! You are a natural writer so blogging will come easily to you.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to many more McLeMusings, my friend! :-) beth
Thank you, Beth.
ReplyDeleteThis was an oasis in my day. My own little garden outside our office door always beckons me to "Look closer". Glad to be included in your musings.
