Unexpected Intersection

Routine stop at the grocery store on my way home from work. The daylight dwindled as I dawdled in the aisles.

Bags in the back seat.
Buckle the belts.
Headlights on.
Head home.

Navigate the crowded parking lot.
Wheel onto the access road.
Stop at the sign.

Crossroads transformed:
an unexpected intersection
of
shadowed asphalt
and startling sunset.

It is simple to see
sunrise on the ocean
moonlight on the mountains

Give me eyes to behold
sunset in the city

HI-biscus

The hibiscus
though common
is exquisite.
Each bloom lasts but a day.
When beleaguered or busy
I miss the moment.
Perhaps another
tomorrow.
Perhaps not.
A ready reminder to look
and not overlook
extraordinary beauty
waiting in the commonplace.

I'm not sure what it means to inaugurate this blog with a tropical flower blossoming in December.

I suppose bold blooms on the eve of blustering cold somehow speak to me...

Winter will come soon enough.
And I know each season has
beauties and consolations.

Today the soft breeze brushes my cheek.
Today the sunshine warms my face.
Today the hibiscus is ablaze with beauty.
